The present article is based on the report, which was planned to be presented at the session «The Historiographic Traditions of Russian Ethnology ...» of the XIV Congress of Anthropologists and Ethnologists of Russia in July 2021. Unlike the published abstract, the article examines and compares the views on the history of anthropological studies on the peoples of Russia of four instead of three major Soviet-Russian anthropologists, whose contemporary I was lucky to be. These are my first Teacher – Georgy Frantsevich Debets (1905-1969), my second Teacher – Viktor Valerianovich Bunak (1891-1979), and two colleagues – Valery Pavlovich Alekseev (1929 -1991) and Alexander Alexandrovich Zubov (1934-2013). The present article is based on the following sources: the transcripts of two lectures read by G.F. Debets in 1954 at the department of anthropology of the Moscow State University for the 5th year students (see Gerasimova 2020), the article by V.V. Bunak (Bunak, 1972) in the «Anthropology of the 70-s» collection and articles by V.P. Alekseev (Alekseev 1987) and A.A. Zubov (Zubov 2002).
