Abstract

Karakalpaks have a very extensive generic structure, which includes several levels. The small generic subdivision of Karakalpaks is Koshe. It is a family and genetic group comprising familial line of the male. Each Koshe has its own name. Mainly, these names are associated with the nicknames of founding fathers. The reviewed materials reveal that generic relations determined the settlement type of Karakalpaks. The reasons for preserving Koshe and other institutions are the features of the socioeconomic life of the people that include elements such as collective economic work, collective activities, traditional customs and rituals, honoring and respect of the older generation, neighbor and relative mutual assistance, religious customs, and so on. However, it should be noted that, the original functions of koshe have been changed although its concept was preserved in the social life of the people. Now, the kinship unit has lost one of its main characteristics, which referred a compact location in a certain area.
