RULES FOR REGISTRATION OF ARTICLES

General

Submitting your manuscript to be published in the ‘Siberian Historical Research’ journal you confirm that:

  • your paper has never been published elsewhere before and will not be submitted for publication elsewhere until the decision to publish it (or not to) in the ‘Siberian Historical Research’ journal is made;
  • you yourself are the author of the submitted paper and you have not used any parts of other authors’ works without reference to those.

Papers shall not exceed 50,000 characters including spaces or about 7000 words – for research papers, or 800 to 3000 words – for information materials, including overviews and reviews.

Reviewing process

All thematically relevant articles submitted to the journal are subject to double blind peer review. All submitted texts without author’s name are forwarded to independent anonymous reviewers; according to Editorial Board’s decision, only those articles get published that have received two positive reviews. Among reviewers of the journal are leading scholars from Russian universities and institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences as well as international experts in the field of history, socio-cultural anthropology, archaeology, and international relations that have published on the topic of an article under review over the past 3 years. Reviews are kept by the publishing house and the Editorial Board for 5 years.

The Editorial Board sends to authors of submitted articles summaries of reviews or a motivated refusal.

Formatting Guidelines

Papers are to be submitted in an electronic format. Text shall be typed in MS Word (*.doc or *.rtf), Times New Roman, 12 pt, line spacing 1, all margins 2 cm, indention 0,5 cm.

The title page shall contain the Universal Decimall Classification number (UDC) and all of the following is to be indented:

Author details (to be provided on a separate/title sheet)

  • Author’s full name (last name, first name, patronym), both in Russian and English (please note that the author’s last name is to be given on the title page only. The first page shall contain the title of paper and not the author’s name or any other details of his/hers!)
  • Academic degree, academic title;
  • Place of work/study and position; please provide official name of your organization in English as well;
  • E-mail;
  • Postal address;
  • Telephone (office and, if possible, cell phone number to facilitate communication);

Paper details:

  • Title of paper both in Russian and in English;
  • Summary of paper in Russian and in English (up to 250 words each);
  • Key words in Russian and in English.

When writing a summary, we kindly ask authors to keep it clear, simple and concise. The summary shall contain statement of problem, how it has been dealt with and discussed in the academia, sources and methods for research, research results showing your contribution to the existing discourse and conclusions. Please stick to the proposed paper structure so as to facilitate your work and that of the Editorial Board.

Page numbering is consecutive, starting from the first page, at the bottom, centered.

Structuring the text. To better structure and present your paper, please divide the text into separate parts, each with its own subheading like “Introduction”,  “Conclusions” and any other which you might find necessary or useful to have.

Illustrations (drawings, tables, graphics, diagrams, etc.) are to be submitted in separate files. Drawings/pictures shall be presented in black-and-white, fullcolour illustrations are so far accepted only for papers on ethnological or archaeological topics. Illustrations should be in TIFF or JPEG format, at least 400 dpi. Please do not insert illustrations in the text, instead indicate Fig.1, Fig.2 etc. in between paragraphs, and provide titles of pictures.

Illustrative material submitted without a written permission of its author or copyright holder will not be accepted for publication.  

If using additional fonts, please submit them in a separate file, too.

References:

  1. To ensure better meeting the requirements of blind anonymous peer-review, when submitting your manuscript to the Editorial Board for the first time, please avoid self-citation and leave footnotes referring to your works blank. Once your manuscript is accepted for publication, you will be able to put those back in your paper.
  2. When citing a foreign paper, Russian transcription of its author’s last name with the Latin spelling in brackets are to be provided in the text.
  3. To save space, if the author’s name has already been mentioned in the text, please indicate only the year of publication put in brackets after the author’s name, when referring to his/her paper: “In his paper V.Ya. Propp (1955) analyzes…”
  4. In all other cases the author’s last name and year of publication shall be given in brackets without a comma: (Balzer 2011); if there are two authors, last names of both are to be given, in case there are three authors, last names of all the three are to be given only if mentioned in the text for the first time (Ivanov, Petrov, Sidorov 1980), and only the “et al” is to be put afterwards (Ivanov et al. 1980). When referring to a paper by more than three authors, please put the “et al” even if it is the first mention of it in the text.
  5. When referring to works by several authors, indicate their names separated by a semicolon: (Anokhin 1924; Potapow 1963). When referring to several papers by the same author, years of publication shall be separeted by a comma followed by a space: (Batyanova 1987,  2005).
  6. When referring to collective works, it is sufficient to indicate the title’s first word or a few words and the year of publication. For example, a reference to the book «Wege zum Norden. Wiener Forschungen zu Arktis und Subarktis» may be put like this: (Wege zum Norden … 2013).
  7. If the date of publication is unknown, please indicate “s.d.” (sine data) and if the publication is currently in press, put “in press”: (Ivanov, s.d.) and (Petrov, in press).
  8. Page numbers shall be provided after a year of publication separated by a colon: (Bellah et al. 2008: viii).
  9. If you are placing several references to the same paper within a paragraph, it is sufficient to only indicate relevant page numbers of that paper when mentioning it for the second, third time and so on, e.g. (Schiller 2011: 192) - when referring for the first time and (193-194) - in case of second mentioning etc.
  10. Range of pages and dates is to be indicated by an en dash: 99–102, 1985–1990.
  11. Numbers in a range of pages shall be given in full: 124–128, and not 124–28.

Reference list is to be provided at the end of the paper. Samples:

Notes are to be given as endnotes using Arabic numerals. Numbering is consecutive, starting from number 1.

If using acronyms /abbreviations in the text, please provide a list of them separately.

Copyright

Once agreed to publish his/her paper in the journal, the author (unconditionally reserving the copyright) grants to the journal the right of first publication based on the Creative Commons Attribution License which allows using his/her paper by others provided there is a reference made to the author of the original text and to the original journal publication.
