Abstract

The author presents a review of the only existing large (two-volume) encyclopedia on medical anthropology, giving review of most of the articles included in the book. (Encyclopedia of Medical Anthropology: Health and Illness in the World’s Cultures. Edited by Carol R. Ember and Melvin Ember. 2 vols. New York, Boston, Dordrecht, London, Moscow: Kluwer Academic / Plenum Publishers, 2004. – 1071 p.). Analyzing specific articles, D. Mikhel examines their content, underlining at the same time their shortcomings, for example, a lack of special materials on Slavic and some other cultures. It is emphasized that this publication will be extremely useful for a wide range of researchers, students and all who wish to familiarize themselves with cultures, and specifically health-related traditions of different peoples.
